About Lisa

Based in Napier, the Children's Continence Service is led by Lisa Smith, a Registered Nurse who has specialised in Paediatric Nursing for almost 40yrs. She has spent the last 17yrs focusing on Bowel and Bladder Problems in Children.

The holistic approach is based on her Children’s Continence model: The 4 B’s: Brain, Bowel, Bladder and Behaviour. Then encircling this is the environment around the child/family that can have a positive or negative impact on the problem.

Often, children who have wetting and soiling problems have behavioural issues too,  which can become particularly troublesome for the family to manage along with the toileting problem.

Lisa has a wealth of experience and practical knowledge dealing with behaviour management, having 23yrs of  lived experience with her son who has Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).

Stress and anxiety is a big factor contributing to toileting issues in children and Lisa has attended training through Relax Kids, worldwide organisation which helps to develop a child’s self confidence,  build emotional resilience and reduce anxiety.

An initial continence assessment can take up to 2hrs to ensure that Lisa has obtained all the information necessary to formulate a unique intervention plan specific for the child and family.  She may also liaise with the child’s Daycare or School in order for the child to be fully supported.

“I highly recommend Lisa - her caring approach and connection with my 9 year old son helped him overcome his bowel and bladder issue successfully. His confidence has grown and he is no longer anxious about going to school and is looking forward to having some sleepovers. Lisa has the knowledge, tools and a welcoming personality, this was all so important to put him at ease and to engage with the process. ”

Thank you so much!
